イタリアのポンペイ遺跡は古代ローマの街並みをそのまま留めている。西暦79年のベスビオ火山の噴火により、街ごと火山噴出物の下に埋もれたためだ。18世紀以降、発掘が進められてきたこの古代遺跡は第二次世界大戦中に新たな悲劇に見舞われた。連合国軍による爆撃を受けたのだ。科学者チームが、今もなお埋まっているといわれる不発弾を探す。そして、なぜこの貴重な文化遺産は爆撃されたのか、その謎に挑む。
