1909年、アメリカ。先住民族の青年ウイリーが、年に一度の祭りのため故郷の居留地に戻ってきた。同族の恋人ローラの家族に結婚を承諾してもらおうとするが、夜間、彼女の父親を誤って銃殺してしまう。ローラを連れて逃避行を余儀なくされたウイリーを、保安官補のクーパーらが執拗に追跡する。やがて訪れる事件の結末。それはあまりにも衝撃的だった…。
